WAE CW Results Added to 2010 WRTC Qualifying Numbers; All Signs Point To Final Shootout In March '09 Russian DX Test

Another set of contest results are in from 2008, and that has again shaken up the roster of operators who would qualify for the 2010 World Radiosport Team Championships in Russia.

The final numbers from the WAE CW contest had the biggest impact in South America, as two new leaders emerged there, with Luciano Moreira PY8AZT (PT7AG) now leading the all-Brazil region, while Paolo Stradiotto YV1DIG is ahead in SA #2.

There is also a new leader in the Australia-New Zealand qualifying region in Oceania, as Robert McCormack ZL1AIH used a strong WAE CW finish to move ahead of Bernd Langer VK2IA.

Of course, there are still a lot of numbers to come in, including one more qualifier, the 2009 Russian DX Contest on the third weekend in March.

The next results expected to be publicly issued before the start of the Russian DX test are the 2008 WAE SSB and the 2008 IARU numbers, both of which could change the look of the various regions.

Operators in the US and Canada still await the results of seven contests, while outside of W/VE, there are five to go.

The final qualifier as noted above is the 2009 Russian DX Contest, which has 910 WRTC points to offer to regional winners - more than enough to shake up a number of WRTC regions at this point in time.

At this point, only a few operators seem to have clinched a spot in the 2010 WRTC.

The top two scores are both from Asia, led by Japanese contester Masaki Masa Okano JH4UYB, who has logged 7,100 WRTC points, the highest score in the entire world.

The highest possible qualifying score would be 7,520 points, which can only be reached if a station won full points in six different CQ WW DX contests, which offer 950 points each, plus top points in two Russian DX Contests at 910 apiece.

Next after JH4UYB is Vadim Ovasiannikov UA9CLB, who leads the AS #2 region with 6,910 points.

In the right hand column, radio-sport.net has broken down the current qualifiers for the 2010 WRTC from each of the qualifying regions.

Those calls are obviously subject to change, depending on the results from the 2008 contests which are still not final.

Also, six other teams will be invited for a total of 50 teams.

Those include the WRTC 2006 champions, John Sluymer VE3EJ and Jim Roberts VE7ZO.

The Russian hosts for the 2010 WRTC can also name one team, and four other teams will be sponsored into the competition as well.

  • WRTC Qualifying Results

While there is only one event left in qualifying for the 2010 WRTC, the next few months will bring in some crucial results.

For stations outside the US and Canada, results are outstanding from six contests that were held in 2008:

  • CQ WPX CW

  • IARU

  • WAE SSB

  • CQ WW DX SSB

  • CQ WW DX CW

For operators in the United States and Canada, results from those same five contests must be factored into the WRTC qualifyication process, along with two other tests:

  • ARRL November Sweepstakes CW

  • ARRL November Sweepstakes SSB
