2010 WRTC Qualifying Now In Home Stretch; More Results To Come; '09 Russian DX Final Test

After a flurry of qualifying contests for the 2010 World Radiosport Team Championships over the last few months of 2008, now there's nothing to do except wait for the results and prep for the final WRTC qualifier.

"Win or lose, it has been great fun for me to try and qualify," said Richard King K5NA, who is in a close fight to hold onto a qualifying spot in NA #3.

"To steal a quote from Nathan Arizona Sr., 'I do love radio contesting so,'" King added.

As of now, operator like King in the US and Canada have eight contest results still to be factored into the final qualifying scores for the 2010 WRTC in Russia.

Operators outside the US and Canada have only six - the difference being the two ARRL November Sweepstakes contests that are only for W/VE operators.

The final qualifier as noted above is the 2009 Russian DX Contest, which has 910 WRTC points to offer to regional winners - more than enough to shake up a number of WRTC regions at this point in time.

According to the unofficial review of WRTC scores by radio-sport.net, at this point only a few operators have likely clinched a spot in the 2010 WRTC.

They include Masaki Masa Okano JH4UYB, who has logged 7,100 WRTC points, the highest score in the entire world.

The highest possible qualifying score would be 7,520 points, which can only be reached if a station won full points in six different CQ WW DX contests, which offer 950 points each, plus top points in two Russian DX Contests at 910 apiece.

Other stations who may already be in as a qualifier include Tonno Vahk ES5TV at 6,468 points overall and Vladimir Askenov RW1AC at 6,441 WRTC points.

In the right hand column, radio-sport.net has broken down the current qualifiers for the 2010 WRTC from each of the qualifying regions.

Those calls are obviously subject to change, depending on the results from the 2008 contests which are still not final.

Also, six other teams will be invited for a total of 50 teams.

Those include the WRTC 2006 champions, John Sluymer VE3EJ and Jim Roberts VE7ZO.

The Russian hosts for the 2010 WRTC can also name one team, and four other teams will be sponsored into the competition as well.

UPCOMING WRTC QUALIFIERS

2009 Russian DX Contest

1200z March 21 - 1200z March 22; more on the rules at the RDXC web site. WRTC weight value of 910 points.

This is the final qualifying event for the 2010 WRTC.

WRTC Qualifying Results

While there is only one event left in qualifying for the 2010 WRTC, the next few months will bring in some crucial results.

For stations outside the US and Canada, results are outstanding from six contests that were held in 2008:

  • CQ WPX CW

  • IARU

  • WAE CW

  • WAE SSB
