World Radiosport Team Championship To Return To USA; 2014 From New England

For the third time, the United States will play host to the World Cup of ham radio contesting, as the World Radiosport Team Championship will return to the U.S. in 2014.

The selection was announced by WRTC Sanctioning Committee chairman Tine Brajnik, as the US group, led by Doug Grant K1DG and Randy Thompson K5ZD won out over a group from Bulgaria.

"Making the decision to award the organization of WRTC 2014 was very difficult," Brajnik said in a statement posted on the UK-Contest and CQ-Contest reflectors.

"All members of the WRTC SC were convinced that either group would provide competent and trustworthy sponsorship," he added.

The news was certainly well received in the halls of the Yankee Clipper Contest Club.

"The WRTC New England organizing committee, led by Doug Grant, K1DG, is excited to receive the decision of the WRTC Sanctioning Committee," said a statement from Randy Thompson K5ZD.

"In addition to the on-air competition, we intend to use WRTC as a platform to promote amateur radio and contesting to the general public. We will be seeking help from many people to make a great event in 2014."

Speculation in recent days had been building that the New England bid would win out for the 2014 WRTC.

This the first time the contest will have been centered on the East Coast of the U.S.

Here is the full statement from S50A:

September 9, 2010

After studying and discussing two thorough proposals to host WRTC 2014 by a team from New England, USA and a team from Bulgaria, the WRTC Sanctioning Committee (WRTC SC) has granted the organization of WRTC 2014 to New England, USA. All members of the WRTC SC were convinced that either group would provide competent and trustworthy sponsorship. Making the decision to award the organization of WRTC 2014 was very difficult. We also thank both teams for their interest and for sharing their vision for WRTC - it is a pity that only one could be selected.

The Committee will work closely with the New England group to help find solutions for questions and problems as they arise. Further, the Committee encourages the Bulgarian team to pursue its interest in future WRTC events and support WRTC 2014 with suggestions and ideas from the European perspective.

We encourage all radiosport participants around the world to extend their congratulations and support to the organizers of WRTC 2014 - we'll see you there!

73,
Tine Brajnik, S50A
WRTC SC Chairman
