WRTC Canada: VE3DZ Maintains Edge With WAE CW Results; VE7CC Expands Lead In West

By Jamie Dupree NS3T  radio-sport.net
Posted January 30, 2009

With fresh results from the 2008 WAE CW contest, the leaders remain the same in the two Canadian qualifying regions for the 2010 World Radiosport Team Championships.

With US operators getting the highest WAE scores in NA #5, the totals didn't change for frontrunner Yuri Onipko VE3DZ, who still has a 65 point edge over Ron Vander Kraats VE3AT.

VE3DZ and VE3AT have flip-flopped back and forth in the lead and second place, and it may well take the final qualifying event, the 2009 Russian DX Contest to settle the winner in this regional.

Out West in NA #6, Lee Sawkins VE7CC expanded his lead with a top finish in WAE CW, giving him another 730 WRTC points. That now gives him a 715 point edge over former leader Bud Mortenson VA7ST.

Still in third is Daniel Lazar VE6EX, who had made a charge for the lead earlier this year. He stands 789 points behind VE7CC.

The Russian qualifying criteria give Canada a pair of teams for the 2010 competition, one from each region.

Here are the top five operators from Canada's two WRTC regions as determined by radio-sport.net. Check the link for a full spreadsheet on each region.

NA #5 includes VO1, VY2, VE1, VE2, VE3, VE4, VO2 and VE9.

  • VE3DZ 6,030 - (8 scores)

  • VE3AT 5,975 - (8 scores)

  • VE3EJ 5,777 - (8 scores)

  • VE3EY 4,151 - (8 scores)

  • VE2XAA 3,892 - (8 scores)

NA #6 is VE5, VE6, VE7, VE8, VY0 and VY1.

  • VE7CC 6,122 - (8 scores)

  • VA7ST 5,407 - (8 scores)

  • VE6EX 5,333 - (8 scores)

  • VE6CNU 4,136 - (8 scores)

  • VE5UA 3,881 - (5 scores)

The full results are available on a spreadsheet for NA #6

There is only one qualifying event remaining for the 2010 WRTC, that being the 2009 Russian DX Contest.

The standings though could still change a lot, as results from seven contests 2008 still must come in.

Those include the WPX CW, IARU, WAE SSB and both legs of the 2008 November Sweepstakes and CQ WW DX.

The unofficial results produced here by radio-sport.net include the final published results of the 2006 and 2007 IARU, the 2006 and 2007 WAE CW and WAE SSB, 2006 and 2007 CQ WW CW and SSB contests, 2007 and 2008 ARRL DX SSB & CW, 2007 Russian DX, 2007 CQ WPX SSB and CW contests, 2008 WAE CW, 2008 WPX SSB, 2007 November Sweepstakes and the 2007 and 2008 NA Sprints.

(Radio-sport.net has tried to be as accurate as possible. If you find a mistake, or that your score line is missing a contest result, please send us an email and we will be happy to check and correct the numbers.)

The qualifying rules allow you to submit your top eight scores from certain contests. No more than four may be from multi-operator efforts.

You will note that some scores in the spreadsheets have been colored in. All multi-ops are noted with a yellow background. Scores from a contest operation outside of your home WRTC region are colored in blue.

A score that was both outside your home region and from a multi-op has a purple color.
