2010 WRTC South America: YV1DIG, PY8AZT Strengthen Lead For Two Tickets To Russia

By Jamie Dupree NS3T  radio-sport.net
Posted March 25, 2009

With the addition of final results from three 2008 contests, the two South American WRTC qualifying leaders have moved one step closer to wrapping up a qualifying slot for the 2010 World Radiosport Team Championships in Russia.

In the all-Brazil SA #1 region, Luciano Moreira PY8AZT (PT7AG) still only leads Vitor Santos PY2NY by 99 points, but that lead should increased based on PY8AZT's performances in the 2008 CQ WW DX Contests.

Still, the Russian DX Contest in 2009 could prove pivotal in South America, as it may in a number of WRTC qualifying battles around the world.

In the SA #2 region, Paolo Stradiotto YV1DIG used a top regional finish in WAE SSB to bolster his case for a spot in the 2010 Russia field, as he now owns a 725 point lead over Juan Pablo Merce LU4DX.

That lead was only 288 points in the last radio-sport.net update.

Staying in third was Lucas Mairov LU1FAM, but he now trails YV1DIG by almost 800 points overall.

Under the 2010 WRTC rules, one team leader qualifies from each of South America's two regions, making these contests all the more important for the top operators in each region.

Here are the top five operators from SA #1 as found by radio-sport.net. A full spreadsheet link for each region is available.

SA #1 is Brazil.

  • PY8AZT 5,796 - (8 scores)

  • PY2NY 5,697 - (8 scores)

  • PY2MNL 5,006 - (8 scores)

  • PT7CB 4,949 - (8 scores)

  • PY2ZXU 4,354 - (8 scores)

SA #2 is all of South America outside of Brazil.

  • YV1DIG 4,636 - (8 scores)

  • LU4DX 3,911 - (8 scores)

  • LU1FAM 3,841 - (8 scores)

  • LU5DX 3,447 - (8 scores)

  • LU7HN 3,362 - (8 scores)

There are no more qualifying events left for stations in South America, but results must still come in from three contests, the 2008 CQ WW DX SSB and CW tests and the 2009 Russian DX contest.

The unofficial results produced here by radio-sport.net include the final published results of the 2006 and 2007 IARU, the 2006 and 2007 WAE CW and WAE SSB, 2006 the CQ WW CW and SSB contests, 2007 ARRL DX SSB & CW, 2007 & 2008 Russian DX, 2007 CQ WPX SSB and CW contests, the 2007 CQ WW SSB and CW tests, the 2008 ARRL DX Contests, 2008 WAE CW and the 2008 CQ WPX SSB.

(Radio-sport.net has tried to be as accurate as possible. If you find a mistake, or that your score line is missing a contest result, please send us an email and we will be happy to check and correct the numbers.)

The qualifying rules allow you to submit your top eight scores from certain contests. No more than four may be from multi-operator efforts.

You will note that some scores in the spreadsheets have been colored in. All multi-ops are noted with a yellow background. Scores from a contest operation outside of your home WRTC region are colored in blue.

A score that was both outside your home region and from a multi-op has a purple color.

The qualifying rules stipulate that no more than four of your eight best scores can come from a multi-operator effort - AND no more than four of your scores can be from outside your "home" region.

On the far right of the spreadsheet, some stations have a list of how many multi-op scores and how many are DX. It is mainly noted for those who are over the limit or close to it.
