WRTC Europe: G4PIQ, OM3LA, ES5TV, 4O3A, RW1AC Lead The Race For 21 Team Leader Slots

By Jamie Dupree NS3T  radio-sport.net
Updated September 25, 2009

The numbers are all in for Europe, as the final results of the last three WRTC qualifying contests caused a bit of a shakeup, but no major surprises, for some of those trying to qualify for 21 team leader slots available to Europe for the 2010 World Radiosport Team Championships.

The unofficial radio-sport.net numbers show the five regional qualifiers are now Andy Cook G4PIQ, Ivan Dobrocky OM3LA, Tonno Vahk ES5TV, Ranko Boca 4O3A and Vladimir Askenov RW1AC.

In the EU #1 region, G4PIQ took the lead from IZ3EYZ thanks to an 847 WRTC point multi effort in CQ WW CW 2008.

Another Italian, Roberto Soro I2WIJ is solidly in third place and ready to go to Russia next year, after taking a jump up from fifth place to secure a spot in WRTC.

Meanwhile, the battle for the fourth and final WRTC team leader slot was very close between Jacques Saget F6BEE and Stefano Brioschi IK2QEI.

Saget squeaked out just enough points in the 2008 CQ WW CW and 2009 Russian DX contests to give him a 19 point edge over Brioschi.

Here are the top five results in EU #1 as determined by radio-sport.net. A spreadsheet of top scorers is also available.

EU #1 includes 3A-9H-C3-EA-EA6-CT-CU-F-G-EI-I-T7-TK-ZB2

  • G4PIQ 6,213 (8 scores)

  • IZ3EYZ 6,160 - (8 scores)

  • I2WIJ 5,798 - (8 scores)

  • F6BEE 5,397 - (8 scores)

  • IK2QEI 5,378 - (8 scores)

Results of the last three contests for WRTC points shook up the standings a bit in the EU #2 region, but the five likely WRTC qualifiers all stayed the same.

There is a new face at the top, as Ivan Dobrocky OM3LA used 841 and 898 point efforts in the 2008 CQ WW contests to jump to the top of the EU #2 standings. He was helped by the fact that he had only seven scores overall going into those contests.

Also moving up because of CQ WW was Bernd Och DL6FBL, who used two trips to SV9 to gain 950 and 910 WRTC points, finishing comfortably in second place.

In third place is Antal Hudanik HA3OV, with former regional leader Ladislav Vegh OM2VL in fourth. He insured that he would qualify for the 2010 WRTC with a solid finish in the 2009 Russian DX test.

Five team leader slots are available from this region, and the race for that last slot was close, with Rastislav Hrnko OM3BH edging his way past Manfred Wolf DJ5MW by just 35 points.

Those five ops have all applied for the available team leader slots in next year's WRTC.

Here are the top five scores in EU #2: EU #2 has ON-PA-LX-DL-OE-HB-HB0-SP-OK-OM-HA

In the Baltics, the EU #3 top finisher was Tonno Vahk ES5TV, who was one of the few operators to end up with over 7,000 points in the WRTC qualifying competition.

Vahk added to his totals with top scores of 950 and 918 in the 2008 CQ WW contests and then a full 910 in the 2009 Russian DX test.

Moving into second place was Toivo Hallikivi ES2RR, with Toni Linden OH2UA in third. In fourth place is Jurgis Ignotas LY2CY.

The surprise in fifth place is Pasi Luoma-Aho OH6UM, who made a late charge to claim the fifth team leader position, keyed by solid finishes in both CQ WW contests in 2008.

The top five scorers in EU #3 qualify for a WRTC team leader position.

EU #3 is SM-LA-OH-OZ-OY-TF-JW-JX-LY-YL-ES

The big news in EU #4 came from the 2008 CQ WW SSB contest, which brought the disqualification of several Multi-Single teams, knocking out two high finishers from the 2010 WRTC.

With Andy Kotovsky UU4JMG and Darko Martincevic 9A5X out of the way, Ranko Boco 4O3A jumped to the top of the EU #4 leaderboard, thanks to a winning regional finish in CQ WW CW 2008 and a solid result in the 2009 Russian DX Contest.

Now in second place is Hrane Milosevic YT1AD, who locked up a WRTC slot with a winning overall SOAB HP effort from 3V8BB in CQ WW CW.

Overall, five team leader slots are available from this region. Along with YT1AD and 4O3A, Tinje Brajnik S5OA finished in third, just a few points ahead of Andy Ruse YO3JR.

With disqualifications knocking more EU #4 hopefuls out of the way, the fifth place slot went to Roman Tkachenko UR0MC, who used high multi-op finishes in the 2008 CQ WW CW and 2009 Russian DX contests.

On the outside looking in was Alex Avramov LZ4AX, who finished with only seven WRTC scores because of his studies in the United States. If LZ4AX had done one more solid contest from EU #4, he would have qualified for the 2010 WRTC.

As you look at the spreadsheet for EU #4, don't forget the stations that have been disqualified from the WRTC competition have their calls colored in aqua blue.

Under the 2010 WRTC rules, anyone who is DQ'd from a WRTC qualifying contest is not eligible for the competition in Russia.

In the all-Russian EU #5 region, the leader is still Vladimir Askenov RW1AC, who has been at the top of this division since the beginning of the WRTC qualifying competition.

Two team leader slots are available, and that second one is in the hands of Max Pustovit RV3BA, who was able to hold off Andy Melanin UA3DPX.

One note on the top five from this region is that Igor Burykh UA3QDX was disqualified in the 2008 CQ WW CW contest, making him ineligible for a team leader slot in the 2010 WRTC.

Here are the top five in EU #5:

The unofficial results produced here by radio-sport.net include the final published results of the 2006, 2007 and 2008 IARU, the 2006, 2007 and 2008 WAE CW and WAE SSB, the 2006, 2007 and 2008 CQ WW CW and SSB contests, 2007 and 2008 ARRL DX SSB & CW, 2007, 2008 & 2009 Russian DX, along with the 2007 and 2008 CQ WPX SSB and CW tests.

(Radio-sport.net has tried to be as accurate as possible. If you find a mistake, or that your score line is missing a contest result, please send us an email and we will be happy to check and correct the numbers.)

The qualifying rules allow you to submit your top eight scores from certain contests. No more than four may be from multi-operator efforts.

You will note that some scores in the spreadsheets have been colored in. All multi-ops are noted with a yellow background. Scores from a contest operation outside of your home WRTC region are colored in blue.

A score that was both outside your home region and from a multi-op has a purple color.
