WRTC Europe: IZ3EYZ, YT1AD, ES5TV, OM2VL, RW1AC Still Tops In Fight For 21 Team Leader Slots

By Jamie Dupree NS3T  radio-sport.net
Updated March 25, 2009

While the five regional leaders from Europe in WRTC qualifying stayed the same, the addition of results from three 2008 contests shows a lot can still change before those numbers become final.

The five regional leaders are still Matteo Marzilli IZ3EYZ, Ladislav Vegh OM2VL, Tonno Vahk ES5TV, Hrane Milosevic YT1AD and Vladimir Askenov RW1AC.

In the EU #1 region, the lead of IZ3EYZ was chopped in half by second place Andy Cook G4PIQ, who is now 175 points out of first place.

Those two operators are in the strongest position in this region, which has four qualifying team leader slots available.

Still in third after working in the results of the 2008 WAE SSB, IARU and CQ WPX CW is former EU #1 leader Philippe Nouchi F6IFY. He leads fourth place Jacques Saget F6BEE by just one point.

Roberto Soro I2WIJ may have the best chance to jump into the top four right now, as the fifth place Italian op is only 54 points behind F6BEE.

Here are the top five results in EU #1 as determined by radio-sport.net. A full spreadsheet link for each region is available.

EU #1 includes 3A-9H-C3-EA-EA6-CT-CU-F-G-EI-I-T7-TK-ZB2

  • IZ3EYZ 6,051 - (8 scores)

  • G4PIQ 5,876 (8 scores)

  • F6IFY 5,132 - (8 scores)

  • F6BEE 5,141 - (8 scores)

  • I2WIJ 5,077 - (8 scores)

The story line in EU #2 remains the same as Ladislav Vegh OM2VL remains the leader, but his advantage continues to dwindle.

Only 39 points behind now is Antal Hudanik HA3OV, who used strong finishes in the 2008 IARU and WPX CW contests to jump over Bernd Och DL6FBL.

Five team leader slots are available from this region, which right now would also include Ratislav Hrnko OM3BH and Ivan Dobrocky OM3LA.

Dobrocky has a built in advantage right now, because he only has seven of a possible eight qualifying scores, meaning a single operator effort would likely push him even higher in the standings.

The fifth place Dobrocky has an edge of 315 points on Lothar Wilke DL3TD, who is in sixth place.

Here are the top five scores in EU #2: EU #2 has ON-PA-LX-DL-OE-HB-HB0-SP-OK-OM-HA

  • OM2VL 6,220 - (8 scores)

  • HA3OV 6,181 - (8 scores)

  • DL6FBL 6,110 - (8 scores)

  • OM3BH 5,945 - (8 scores)

  • OM3LA 5,778 - (7 scores)

In the Baltics, the EU #3 leader remains Tonno Vahk ES5TV, who used a top regional finish in the 2008 WAE SSB contest to add a few points to his totals.

Vahk's lead though shrunk to only 120 points over Toni Linden OH2UA, who added an eighth score with his own WAE SSB effort.

As of now, those two ops have a decided edge on the rest of the field in the battle for five qualifying slots from this WRTC region.

In third place is Toivo Hallikivi ES2RR, 472 points behind OH2UA. Jurgis Ignotas LY2CY is in fourth place.

From there, it is a 500+ point jump back to Ged Lucinskas LY3BA, who has now moved into fifth place, the final qualifying slot from this region.

The top five scorers in EU #3 qualify for a WRTC team leader position.

EU #3 is SM-LA-OH-OZ-OY-TF-JW-JX-LY-YL-ES

  • ES5TV 6,606- (8 scores)

  • OH2UA 6,486 - (8 scores)

  • ES2RR 6,014 - (8 scores)

  • LY2CY 5,897 - (8 scores)

  • LY3BA 5,392 - (8 scores)

While the results from three 2008 contests didn't change the leader of EU #4, which is still Hrane Milosevic YT1AD, it did see a big jump by Ranko Boca 4O3A, who now finds himself in second place overall in WRTC qualifying from this European division.

Boca may have locked up a WRTC slot already, thanks to his performances in the 2008 CQ WW DX Contests, but for now, he is solidly in second place, 189 points behind YT1AD.

Five team leader slots are available from this region. Along with YT1AD and 4O3A, Tinje Brajnik S5OA is just five points behind 4O3A in third.

From there it goes to Andy Ruse YO3JR, who dropped from third to fourth. He is only 40 points ahead of Andy Kotovsky UU4JMG.

Kotovsky has an over 300 point lead on his nearest pursuer Darko Martincevic 9A5X, who was pushed down to sixth by 4O3A's jump.

As you look at the spreadsheet for EU #4, don't forget UU0JM, UT5UGR and 9A9A have been disqualified from the WRTC competition. They calls are colored in aqua blue.

Under the 2010 WRTC rules, anyone who is DQ'd from a WRTC qualifying contest is not eligible for the competition in Russia.

Radio-sport.net will continue to list the totals of the disqualified stations in the spreadsheets, but not in the overall summaries printed here.

EU #4 is UR-EW-ER-LZ-SV-YO-YU-S5-9A-ZA-Z3-T9-4O

  • YT1AD 6,317 - (8 scores)

  • 4O3A 6,128 - (8 scores)

  • YO3JR 5,978 - (8 scores)

In the all-Russian EU #5 region, the leader is still Vladimir Askenov RW1AC, who has been at the top of this division since the beginning of the WRTC qualifying competition.

Two team leader slots are available, and that second one changed hands in the latest score update, as Max Pustovit RV3BA jumped from fifth to second place thanks to a winning regional effort in the 2008 CQ WPX CW contest.

That moved Andy Melanin UA3DPX down to third place. He trails RV3BA by 184 points, and has the best chance right now of getting back into the second slot.

Melanin has a 128 point edge on Igor Burykh UA3QDX, who is now in fourth place.

Here are the top five in EU #5:

There are no more qualifying events left for stations outside of Russia in Europe, but results must still come in from three contests, the 2008 CQ WW DX SSB and CW tests and the 2009 Russian DX contest.

The unofficial results produced here by radio-sport.net include the final published results of the 2006, 2007 and 2008 IARU, the 2006, 2007 and 2008 WAE CW and WAE SSB, the 2006 and 2007 CQ WW CW and SSB contests, 2007 and 2008 ARRL DX SSB & CW, 2007 & 2008 Russian DX, along with the 2007 and 2008 CQ WPX SSB and CW tests and the 2007 & 2008 EU HF Championships.

(Radio-sport.net has tried to be as accurate as possible. If you find a mistake, or that your score line is missing a contest result, please send us an email and we will be happy to check and correct the numbers.)

The qualifying rules allow you to submit your top eight scores from certain contests. No more than four may be from multi-operator efforts.

You will note that some scores in the spreadsheets have been colored in. All multi-ops are noted with a yellow background. Scores from a contest operation outside of your home WRTC region are colored in blue.

A score that was both outside your home region and from a multi-op has a purple color.
