WRTC Europe: Two New Leaders As IZ3EYZ, YT1AD Join ES5TV OM2VL, RW1AC In Top Slots

By Jamie Dupree NS3T  radio-sport.net
Posted January 12, 2009

With results added in from three 2008 contests, two of Europe's five WRTC qualifying regions now have new leaders, as Matteo Marzilli IZ3EYZ and Hrane Milosevic YT1AD have moved into the top spots of EU #1 and EU #4.

The top qualifiers remained the same in EU #2 (OM2VL), EU #3 (ES5TV) and the all-Russian EU #5 (RW1AC.)

21 team leader slots are at stake in the five European qualifying divisions.

Some of the biggest changes took place in the EU #1 region, where IZ3EYZ used a first place finish in the Russian DX Contest to jump into a 310 point lead over the hard charging Andy Cook G4PIQ.

Cook's top finishes in the EU HF Championships and WPX SSB tests, along with a strong effort in Russian DX allowed him to leapfrog his way to second place.

Dropping from first to third was former EU #1 leader Philippe Nouchi F6IFY.

Four team leader slots are available from EU #1. Right now in fourth is Jacques Saget F6BEE, who leads Filipe Lopes CT1ILT by just 29 points.

Here are the top five results in EU #1 as determined by radio-sport.net. A full spreadsheet link for each region is available.

EU #1 includes 3A-9H-C3-EA-EA6-CT-CU-F-G-EI-I-T7-TK-ZB2

  • IZ3EYZ 5,860 - (8 scores)

  • G4PIQ 5,550 (8 scores)

  • F6IFY 5,132 - (8 scores)

  • F6BEE 4,818 - (8 scores)

  • CT1ILT 4,789 - (8 scores)

In EU #2, the lead still remains in the hands of Ladislav Vegh OM2VL, but his margin continues to shrink. Vegh did not gain any points from the three contests added to the radio-sport.net spreadsheets, as his advantage shrunk to 110 points.

In second and making up ground fast is Bernd Och DL6FBL, who scored well in both the EU HFC and Russian DX tests. He has a 33 point advantage on Antal Hudanik HA3OV, who returned to the top five after dropping down to eighth overall.

Five team leader slots are available in EU #2, meaning that rigth now Ivan Dobrocky OM3LA and Braco Memic OE1EMS would qualify. Memic is just 40 points ahead of sixth place Lothar Wilke DL3TD.

Here are the top five scores in EU #2: EU #2 has ON-PA-LX-DL-OE-HB-HB0-SP-OK-OM-HA

  • OM2VL 6,220 - (8 scores)

  • DL6FBL 6,110 - (8 scores)

  • HA3OV 6,077 - (7 scores)

  • OM3LA 5,778 - (7 scores)

  • OE1EMS 5,452 - (8 scores)

In EU #3, Tonno Vahk ES5TV has maintained his lead in the battle for five qualifying slots from this region, as he used a top regional finish in the 2008 Russian DX Contest to boost his WRTC points total.

Moving into second place was his Estonanian colleague Toivo Hallikivi ES2RR, who moves ahead of Jurgis Ignota LY2CY. Danius Savicius LY6M is now in fourth, with Toni Linden OH2UA dropping into fifth place.

Linden could easily qualify for the 2010 WRTC, but he has not entered enough contests from back in his home region. Even though he might have the top European score in both legs of the 2008 CQ WW DX Contests, those 950 point WRTC wins won't help him, since he already has four 950 point DX scores.

That could give Ged Lucinskas LY3BA and others just behind Linden the chance to edge their way into a qualifying position.

The top five scorers in EU #3 qualify for a WRTC team leader position.

EU #3 is SM-LA-OH-OZ-OY-TF-JW-JX-LY-YL-ES

  • ES5TV 6,468- (8 scores)

  • ES2RR 5,792 - (8 scores)

  • LY2CY 5,662 - (8 scores)

  • LY6M 5,211 - (8 scores)

  • OH2UA 5,208 - (6 scores)

Change was the buzz word in WRTC region EU #4, as Hrane Milosevic YT1AD used high finishes in both the EU HF Championships and Russian DX tests to move into the top slot in the standings.

Also jumping up was Tine Brajnik S50A, as he jumped into second place overall, by just 10 points over former leader Andy Kotovsky UU4JMG.

In fourth now is Andy Ruse YO3JR, who had 850 points in EU HFC and 823 in Russian DX. In fifth is Darko Martincevic 9A5X.

9A5X is only 30 points ahead of Ranko Boca 4O3A, who scored well in the 2008 CQ WW DX Contests. We'll see in coming months if that's enough to give him a WRTC qualifying spot.

As you look at the spreadsheet for EU #4, don't forget UU0JM, UT5UGR and 9A9A have been disqualified from the WRTC competition. They calls are colored in aqua blue.

Under the 2010 WRTC rules, anyone who is DQ'd from a WRTC qualifying contest is not eligible for the competition in Russia.

Radio-sport.net will continue to list the totals of the disqualified stations in the spreadsheets, but not in the overall summaries printed here.

EU #4 is UR-EW-ER-LZ-SV-YO-YU-S5-9A-ZA-Z3-T9-4O

  • YT1AD 6,090 - (8 scores)

  • S50A 5,874 - (8 scores)

  • UU4JMG 5,864 - (8 scores)

  • YO3JR 5,715 - (7 scores)

  • 9A5X 5,596 - (8 scores)

In the all-Russian EU #5 region, the lead remains Vladimir Askenov RW1AC, though his lead shrunk slightly from just a few months ago.

For the past year, Askenov had the highest score of any European station in the WRTC qualifying process, but he's now dropped behind Tonno Vahk ES5TV.

Unlike the rest of Europe, EU #5 only has two team leader slots available, and right now that is in the hands of Andy Melanin UA3DPX, who scored well in Russian DX and the 2008 WPX SSB test.

Melanin has a 176 point edge on Igor Avdeev UA2FZ. It's just another 50 points back to Igor Burykh UA3QDX, who fell from second place, showing that the 2009 Russian DX Contest could well determine the fate of many WRTC entrants. EU #5 is European Russia

  • RW1AC 6,441 - (8 scores)

  • UA3DPX 5,745 - (8 scores)

  • UA2FZ 5,569 - (8 scores)

  • UA3QDX 5,519 - (8 scores)

  • RV3BA 5,453 - (8 scores)

There is only one qualifying event left for stations in Europe, but results must still come in from six contests that were held in 2008: WPX CW, IARU, WAE CW, WAE SSB and both legs of CQ WW DX.

The unofficial results produced here by radio-sport.net include the final published results of the 2006 and 2007 IARU, the 2006 and 2007 WAE CW and WAE SSB, 2006 the CQ WW CW and SSB contests, 2007 ARRL DX SSB & CW, 2007 & 2008 Russian DX, 2007 CQ WPX SSB and CW contests, the 2007 CQ WW SSB and CW tests, the 2008 ARRL DX Contests and the 2008 CQ WPX SSB.

(Radio-sport.net has tried to be as accurate as possible. If you find a mistake, or that your score line is missing a contest result, please send us an email and we will be happy to check and correct the numbers.)

The qualifying rules allow you to submit your top eight scores from certain contests. No more than four may be from multi-operator efforts.

You will note that some scores in the spreadsheets have been colored in. All multi-ops are noted with a yellow background. Scores from a contest operation outside of your home WRTC region are colored in blue.

A score that was both outside your home region and from a multi-op has a purple color.
