WRTC Asia: JH4UYB, UA9CLB, UN9LW Finish Tops In Three Asian Qualifying Races For Russia 2010

By Jamie Dupree NS3T  radio-sport.net
Posted September 25, 2009

The numbers are all in for Asian qualifying for the 2010 World Radiosport Team Championships, as the unofficial radio-sport.net review of over two years of results shows these hams grabbed one of the six Team Leader slots set aside for their regions:

AS #1 - Masaki Masa Okano JH4UYB

AS #2 - Vadim Ovasiannikov UA9CLB, Yuri Kurinyi UA9AM

AS #3 - Vladimir Vinichenko UN9LW, Steve Hodgson ZC4LI, Marios Nicalaou 5B4WN

The results of the final three qualifying contests from 2008 did little to change the outcomes in Asia's three regions for the 2010 World Radiosport Team Championships in Russia.

In AS #1, the winner of the only Team Leader slot has been known for months as Okano JH4UYB, owns the best score in the world in WRTC qualifying, as he received the maximum points possible of 7,520.

Okano put that together with six regional wins in the six CQ WW DX contests that were part of qualifying, plus two top finishes in the Russian DX test, giving him the max scores of 950 and 910 in those two tests.

His final three first place regional finishes boosted Okano's score an extra 420 points, giving him an over three thousand point lead over JF1SQC.

Over in AS #2, Vadim Ovasiannikov UA9CLB used regional wins in both legs of CQ WW and a top multi-op finish in the 2009 Russian DX to secure first place in this region with 7.340 points.

Two team leader spots are available in AS #2, and the second one appears to have gone to Yuri Kurinyi UA9AM.

In region AS #3, which comprises all areas in Asia outside of Japan and Asiatic Russia, the results of the final three contests did not change anything in terms of the leaders, which gave the chance for one operator to make a surge into the top three.

Marios Nicolaou 5B4WN, who also uses C4W and G0WWW for contesting, used a top regional finish in CQ WW CW to give himself 950 points, helping him leapfrog his way into third place, and a qualifying position for WRTC 2010.

That knocked Champ E21EIC down into fourth place.

At the top of AS #3 is Vladimir Vinichenko UN9LW. He cemented his lead with a top multi-op result in the 2009 Russian DX, giving him 5,728 points in the battle for three team leader positions.

Easily finishing in second place was Steve Hodgson ZC4LI, who tallied 698 WRTC points in this year's Russian DX.

The unofficial results produced here by radio-sport.net include the final published results of the 2006, 2007 and 2008 IARU, the 2006, 2007 and 2008 WAE CW and WAE SSB, the 2006, 2007 and 2008 CQ WW CW and SSB contests, 2007 and 2008 ARRL DX SSB & CW, 2007, 2008 & 2009 Russian DX, along with the 2007 and 2008 CQ WPX SSB and CW tests.

(Radio-sport.net has tried to be as accurate as possible. If you find a mistake, or that your score line is missing a contest result, please send us an email and we will be happy to check and correct the numbers.)

The qualifying rules allow you to submit your top eight scores from certain contests. No more than four may be from multi-operator efforts.

You will note that some scores in the spreadsheets have been colored in. All multi-ops are noted with a yellow background. Scores from a contest operation outside of your home WRTC region are colored in blue.

A score that was both outside your home region and from a multi-op has a purple color.

Check On WRTC Entries

With an October 1 deadline to submit your entry for a team leader spot in the 2010 World Radiosport Team Championships, you can get an internet look at who has sent in their paperwork to Russian organizers of next year's competition.

At the WRTC web site you can not only see which stations have sent in their entries, but also click on their calls to see how they arrived at their score.

Your final score represents the best eight qualifying scores from WRTC contests over the past three years.

Who Are The Regional Leaders?

With all the results in from the WRTC 2010 qualifying contests, here are the operators who have qualified for team leader slots in the various WRTC regions.

Remember - this does not assure them a spot in Russia next year - as each station must submit an entry to the WRTC organizers by October 1.
